Tegla Loroupe is a Kenyan long-distance track and road runner. She was the first African woman to win the New York City Marathon in 1994. She has held world records in several events, including the 20, 25, and 30 kilometers races and the marathon.
Beyond her illustrious running career, Tegla is known throughout the world as a humanitarian. She created the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation, which supports “Peace Through Sports,” and founded the Tegla Loroupe Peace Academy, an orphanage for children in Kenya.
